Cisco to bolster cloud offerings through acquisition of newScale
Cisco plans to build its cloud services capabilities by its acquisition of newScale, a cloud portal software developer with about 2 million users worldwide.
NewScale is a privately held company that develops software which enables businesses to more efficiently provision resources across their IT environments. Through its service catalog and self-service portal, newScale enables IT organizations to browse services available to them and order those services on an on-demand basis.
FrontOffice Suite, NewScale’s premier includes PortfolioCenter, on online brochure providing fuly integrated capabilities for businesses to define their protfolio of IT services, publish their Service Catalogs to market their IT value, and make the catalogs actionable and operational.
The suite also includes RequestCenter, an automated request and fulfillment site that can be deployed through the IT infrastructure, including physical and virtual servers and storage and networking devices, LifecycleCenter which offers management of service items and workloads, and DemandCenter helps manage costs, billing and service demand.
Cisco announced the purchase on March 29, although no financial details were revealed. Cisco representatives say that these capabilities complement their own network-based cloud computing strategy.
In announcing the acquisition, Parvesh Sethi, senior vice president of Cisco Services, said, “Cloud computing represents a major shift in the evolution of the Internet, and as more customers migrate from traditional IT infrastructures, the need for rapid self-provisioning and efficient management becomes increasingly critical.
With the acquisition of newScale, Cisco will be able to accelerate the deployment of cloud services through a service catalog and self-service portal that allows customers to easily manage their IT infrastructures.” Cisco expects the acquisition to be completed in the second half of 2011, with NewScale being folded into Cisco’s Advanced Services unit. Cisco has been looking to buttress its cloud offerings through both in-house development and acquisitions.
December 2010′s purchase of LineSider, whose technology helps businesses’ cloud infrastructure with their existing IT systems, is a recent example. According to Cisco officials, this will ease management hassles created within constantly changing networks when new virtual devices are added or moved.
