Is Virtual Security The Key To Cloud Computing Success?

RSA, a computer company that offer cloud computing services, is bullish about the prospects of virtual system management platforms.
According to its president, Art Coviello, one major stumbling block of this revolutionary technology is security.
He believes that if cloud computing firms properly utilize virtualization technologies, it would become possible to develop security infrastructure that will make cloud computing safe from unauthorized entry from hackers.
He added that the technology is now ripe for businesses to build logical security parameters and the computer world is now slowly moving in this direction, away from depending solely on physical barriers.
Protection should be focused more on data and applications rather than physical structures. Coviello added that for these technologies to become successful, they need to be dynamic not static.
Only having security controls is no longer feasible in today’s market, as the computing field is evolving at a much faster pace than before.
Surprisingly, even though security measures are not yet at levels that would make most businesses feel safe, more and more companies are now choosing to contract their computer processes and files storage to cloud computing platforms. This is mainly due to economic and agility considerations.
When a company chooses to migrate its business’ data to a cloud computing firm, it is making huge savings in fixed costs, which is particularly advantageous for enterprises that are just starting out or have limited financial resources.
I partly agree with the sentiments of RSA’s chief, Art Coviello. Security is a major issue in cloud computing that needs to be addressed. However, I also think he is missing the point somewhat. The industry is remiss in informing the public about what cloud computing is all about and how it can benefit businesses.
There is a need to employ measures that will make the technology, even at the grass roots level. Better yet, there is a need to come up with more cloud computing products which individual users can directly benefit from.
Much energy has been spent on developing cloud computing products for large scale use but the average joe has been ignored.
Cloud computing companies need to concentrate on developing other areas of the business. I think eventually cloud computing security technologies will accelerate and mature.
This, I believe, is the most logical and inevitable progression. On the other hand, marketing the service does not purely rely on logic but also with creative thoughts and intuition. I think this is another area that computing companies should equally focus their efforts on. They should not assume that it will grow on its own.
