Asus Planning Mystery Cloud Computing Enabled Personal Devices For Late 2011

One of the more tantalizing prospects that I have read about recently looks set to come out of Taiwan.

According to an interesting piece by Elizabeth Woyke, Asus is attempting to transform the computer world with a brand-new product that will make it much more competitive in the marketplace.

Asus stole a thunder on its rivals before, when they successfully orchestrated the notebook craze in 2007 through their Eee PC notebook, and are now apparently busying away at the development of a mysterious new computer device that will utilize the latest in systems management technology.

The company is scrambling to position itself in the market right now, as its direction is moving towards portable flat screen devices.

The quickly changing landscape in the computer market today has created in Asus a deep sense of urgency to come up with new and fresh ideas. Its market share is gradually being gobbled up by companies who were quick to incorporate new technologies such as tablet computers like the Apple iPad.

Tantalizingly though, Asus have given no indication as to what form their new device might take, leaving commentators such as Woyke and other industry experts to guess wildly at what it may be.

While many are predicting some fantastic new hybrid of a cellphone or a laptop, it’s my own opinion that Asus probably wouldn’t have been able to keep something as bold and ingenious as that under wraps for this long.

My own guess is that they will simply enter the cellphone market with one of the most innovative smart phones yet released. What is certain though is that this new device will use cloud computing technology.

We know this because recent announcements of key company officials have given hints on what the next big things are for the company. In April of 2010, Asus CEO Jonney Shih let slip in an interview with Forbes that the company is seriously considering making cloud computing-enabled mobile devices.

He also added that they plan to integrate these “game-changing” gadgets with their suite of PC products to allow for a more seamless integration and ultimately enhanced user experience. Shih further commented that they see these products being both WiFi and cellular connectivity enabled.

Industry insiders see these developments as Asus’ way to distinguish themselves from other market players, but it’s going to take something special for them to prove to me that their products are any more useful than what is already available. Asus are expected to unveil the new device for the first time at the Computex event this April. Until then, we’ll hold our breath…
