New cloud computing products take data security to a new level
A small number of cloud computing companies began releasing encryption-capable products to help their customers better protect files stored in cloud computing databases. This type of technology is able to significantly improve the security of sensitive data that is housed in cloud computing databases.
One such company, CipherCloud, which is a start-up enterprise based out of Cupertino, California, have recently launched a product that will allow their customers to encrypt files within their own premises before these gets transferred to a cloud platform.
CipherCloud’s new offering, unlike other similar products in market, allows customers to keep encryption and decryption tools in their sole custody, providing maximum security. Most similar products up until now have not been able to provide the same level of access to customers – instead it is only vendors who have possessed this kind of privilege.
Another feature that sets CipherCloud’s technology apart from others of its kind is that its technology allows users to encrypt files without altering their format or function. In addition, their new offering gives clients an opportunity to mask or replace sensitive or highly confidential entries with dummy values, without affecting their ability to access and manage these files.
CipherCloud’s latest product is designed to work with all cloud computing providers, however its launch version has only been configured for Salesforce.com’s cloud computing database so far. Another company that has also recently released a similar offering for use in Amazon’s Web Service Platform is Vormetric.
This company’s encryption product also lets customers personally encrypt files before these gets shipped to a cloud computing data facility, in addition to giving them the sole access to encryption and decryption tools.
These new technologies can benefit customers in many different ways, not least the utmost security of their data. For example, individuals and enterprises can now store files in a cloud computing data platform that is located beyond their own geographical borders. One group that has recently taken advantage of this is the National Democratic Party (NDP) of Canada, who was previously barred from transferring data to facilities situated in certain areas. Now, NDP officials can encrypt files which will make them unintelligible to any unauthorized persons, making it safe for them to load these into an offsite cloud computing location. The group has been selected by CipherCloud to be one of the main testers of its beta version.
Previously, Salesforce.com had offered the NDP use of their encryption services, however the latter declined the offer as the company’s proposal did not provide the Canadian political party with full access to the encryption and decryption tools that will be used to mask their files.
