How Cloud Computing Affects The Real World

There are many cloud computing products in the market right now, however awareness for them is not that yet widespread.  Cloud computing may appear intimidating to ordinary computer users, which explains why there is not that much knowledge about it yet.  However there are many benefits that can be gained from it.

From the ground level, cloud computing means that your documents would remain almost eternally secure.  The only reason you may lose files is if and when a cloud computing company goes bust.  Nevertheless, if this happens then manufacturers will normally give customers enough lead time to transfer their documents, should they face serious cash flow issues.

In addition, many companies that offer cloud computing products are relatively financially sound, such as Google, who are far from any immediate danger of imminent collapse. Compare this to desktop saving, where you are never assured of the security of your files – CDs can get damaged, hard drives can crash, USB pens can get infected by malware or viruses, etc.

Furthermore, when you use cloud computing you are assured that files have one and only one version. There is also no risk of your documents or files being stored in other people’s USB, laptop, desktop computer, where it can be viewed, re-edited or reformatted.

From the perspective of programmers, cloud computing provides them with a vehicle where they can create software that is completely independent of operating systems, which means that they can create programs that run on Mac, Linux, Windows and even mobile applications.  This feature translates to a lot less work for programmers as there is no need to have to extensively rewrite or reconfigure applications to fit other systems.

Cloud computing also offers a significant advantage with regards to accessibility.  In cloud computing, all data is stored in one facility, which means that all authorized users can access their files anytime, anywhere.  This spells convenience to companies as any employee who has access rights can open files, whenever and wherever they may be.

Even if someone is working on a particular file or program, a colleague can view his work in real time.  For example, if one employee is inputting data onto a spreadsheet application, his boss can view the same document simultaneously and engage the employee in an online chat.

As it stands, there is a clear need for cloud computing companies to engage with consumers more, by educating them on the advantages of using their systems.  There is a need to create awareness and in the meantime scale down on developing their products until such time that the public knows what cloud computing is all about.
