Cloud computing and Mosso
Mosso is a division of the leading Internet hosting firm Rackspace Inc., devoted to developing hosting services for web-based applications, as well as the infrastructure for cloud computing—a relatively new computing model in which users can access and run applications (normally on their desktops) from remote servers over the Internet in real-time.
While Mosso’s parent company Rackspace was founded almost at the height of the dotcom boom in 1998, Mosso was launched a decade later in 2008 to much fun-fare, and considerable success.
Mosso’s Products
Mosso’s main products are its cloud computing platform and hosting for web-based applications, where users can use them on a ‘Software as a Service’ (SaaS) basis.
The division also has interests in the development of infrastructure that makes cloud computing a possibility, as well as cloud storage infrastructure that may eventually eliminating the need for physical storage and make for a fully seamless cloud computing experience.
Cloud Computing at Mosso
Unlike many other organizations mentioned in cloud computing circles, and to whom cloud computing is just a small portion of their total operations, Mosso is a business entity entirely devoted to cloud computing—without the cloud Mosso wouldn’t exist.
To simplify the cloud computing experience, Mosso offers its clients the opportunity to either buy into its ‘cloud sites’, ‘cloud servers’ or ‘cloud files’ services.
Mosso’s ‘cloud sites’ option gives the client an opportunity to set up unlimited sites (complete with e-mail) and databases.
While this might seem to be the same services that web hosting companies currently offer, Mosso’s cloud sites are different in a number of ways.
For starters, their approach to scalability issues is different.
This may not seem like much to the common consumer, but these issues are always a huge concern to those with huge E-commerce capabilities, as you can never be too sure about how large the site will grow—hence the attractiveness of the scalability that Mosso offers.
So confident is Mosso about its ‘cloud sites’ product that it actually offers a month-long free trial.
Mosso’s ‘cloud files’ option gives a client the opportunity to save their files in a secure place—and perhaps even back it up—without bothering with the intricacies of managing a physical data storage facility.
While Mosso’s ‘cloud sites’ is essentially a specialized web hosting service and their ‘cloud files’ is essentially a specialized file storage service, Mosso’s ‘cloud servers’ option is what taps into the real power of cloud computing.
It is through Mosso’s ‘cloud servers’ option that allows you to use server time.
You have complete control over a remote server, as much as you would have with an in-house cloud server. You can run whatever applications you wan for a starting price of less than 10 cents per hour.
Mosso’s cloud computing is perhaps the best indication of the cost advantages that the cloud can offer to those who take the leap into the clouds.
The Future of Cloud Computing at Mosso
The future of cloud computing at Mosso seems to be a bright one, as long as the company gets the message out about what they are doing and as long as Mosso manages to build the kind of confidence needed for consumers and organizations to trust them with all of their applications and data.
If cloud computing turns out to be the next big frontier in computing (and there are big signs that it is,) then it could easily propel pioneers like Mosso to the top and help distinguish them as IT giants of the future.
